The Steep Path

Goodness is pictured as an aqabah — a steep mountain pass: freeing the enslaved, feeding in famine. The climb is hard because it is worth it.

Qur'anic Reference · Al-Balad 90:11–13

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ ۝ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ۝ فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

English Translation

“But he has not attempted the steep path. And what will make you know what the steep path is? It is the freeing of a slave.”

Bengali Translation

“কিন্তু সে দুর্গম গিরিপথে প্রবেশ করেনি। আর কীসে তোমাকে জানাবে দুর্গম গিরিপথ কী? তা হলো দাসমুক্তি।”

The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.

Primary Moral

Real goodness costs a climb — pick the moral uphill your comfort keeps avoiding.

Why This Matters

The verses just before describe a man boasting 'I have squandered heaps of wealth' — spending lavishly on show, yet never attempting the aqabah. Spending is not the test; the direction of spending is. The Qur'an's examples are all liberation and rescue: freeing necks, feeding orphans of near kin and the dust-covered poor on days of hunger — good deeds with gradients.

Reflection

Iqtahama means to plunge into something forbidding — the verse honours not the stroll but the assault on the incline. Flat-ground goodness (easy likes, comfortable donations) maintains us; steep-path goodness (freeing someone from debt, standing with the shunned, feeding when giving pinches) transforms us. The pass is steep precisely because it climbs out of the valley of the self.

Real-Life Application

Identify your flat ground — the giving that costs you nothing — and pick one aqabah this month: clear a struggling person's debt, sponsor an orphan of a relative, or commit to feeding on the day it is least convenient. Let the difficulty be the confirmation, not the deterrent.

Reflection Question

Which act of goodness have you long admired from the bottom of the slope — and what is the first ledge you could actually grab this month?

Action for Today

Take the first step of one steep good deed today — the enquiry, the pledge, or the first instalment.
