Selflessness
The Ansar preferred others over themselves even while in need — ithar, the summit of generosity, named in their honour forever.
Qur'anic Reference · Al-Hashr 59:9
English Translation
“They give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need. And whoever is saved from the greed of his own soul — it is they who are successful.”
Bengali Translation
“তারা নিজেদের অভাব থাকা সত্ত্বেও অন্যদের নিজেদের ওপর প্রাধান্য দেয়। আর যে নিজের মনের কার্পণ্য থেকে রক্ষা পেল, তারাই সফলকাম।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
The highest giving is from your need, not your surplus — and the truest victory is over your own greed.
Why This Matters
Giving leftovers requires no character; preferring another while you yourself lack is what forged the brotherhood of Madinah. The verse locates the real battlefield inside: shuhh, the soul's clinging greed — whoever escapes it has already succeeded, whatever his bank balance.
Reflection
The Ansar had little, shared it with penniless migrants, and are praised in recitation until the end of time — proof that history remembers givers, not keepers. Ithar does not demand destitution; it demands defeating the whisper that says 'you first, always'. Every small preference of another is a small victory in that war.
Real-Life Application
Practise micro-ithar today: the better seat, the last portion, the more convenient time slot — hand one to someone else on purpose. When giving money, take it from something you wanted, not just from what you would not miss.
Reflection Question
When did you last give something you actually wanted to keep — and what did the letting-go do to you?
Action for Today
Give away one thing today that you genuinely like — not your surplus, your preference.
