Dawud is given authority with one command and one warning: judge by truth, and do not follow desire.

يَا دَاوُودُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاكَ خَلِيفَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ فَاحْكُم بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ الْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
English Translation
\u201cO Dawud! We have made you a steward on the earth, so judge between people in truth, and do not follow desire, lest it lead you astray from the way of Allah.\u201d
Bengali Translation
\u201cহে দাউদ! আমি তোমাকে পৃথিবীতে প্রতিনিধি বানিয়েছি; সুতরাং মানুষের মধ্যে সত্যসহ বিচার করো এবং প্রবৃত্তির অনুসরণ কোরো না, নইলে তা তোমাকে আল্লাহর পথ থেকে বিচ্যুত করবে।\u201d

Why This Matters
Everyone holds a courtroom somewhere — a household, a classroom, a team, a comment thread. Rulings bent by mood, favouritism, or self-interest destroy trust in exactly the people who cannot fight back.
Reflection
Even a prophet-king is warned about hawa — desire — as the force that bends verdicts. The verse names authority a stewardship, not a possession: the earth's judges answer to a higher Judge. The test of anyone's justice is the ruling that goes against their own comfort, relative, or reputation.
Real-Life Application
Identify your courtroom — where people await your decisions — and audit last week's rulings: which were truth, and which were mood? Reverse one unfair call, even at the cost of admitting it.

Recall your last decision that affected someone weaker than you — would you defend it in front of a judge you cannot influence?
