The Value of Time
By Time — humanity is in loss, except those with faith, good deeds, and mutual counsel in truth and patience. A complete life-plan in three verses.
Qur'anic Reference · Al-Asr 103:1–3
English Translation
“By time! Indeed, mankind is in loss — except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and counsel one another to truth, and counsel one another to patience.”
Bengali Translation
“সময়ের শপথ! নিশ্চয়ই মানুষ ক্ষতির মধ্যে রয়েছে — তারা ছাড়া, যারা ঈমান আনে ও সৎকর্ম করে এবং পরস্পরকে সত্যের উপদেশ দেয় ও পরস্পরকে ধৈর্যের উপদেশ দেয়।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Time is capital draining by default — only faith, good work, and truthful, patient company convert the loss into profit.
Why This Matters
The oath is by time itself because time is the one asset spent whether or not we choose — every hour leaves the account, and the default balance is khusr, loss. Imam ash-Shafi'i said that had nothing else been revealed, this surah would suffice the people; it is the profit-and-loss statement of a human life, issued in advance.
Reflection
The exception has four clauses, and their order is a curriculum: iman anchors the heart, righteous deeds employ the limbs — but the last two move the project from private to communal: tawasaw is mutual, ongoing counsel, keeping one another on truth and holding one another through the patience truth demands. Solitary religion, the surah implies, rarely survives time; the profitable few travel in caravans that remind and steady each other.
Real-Life Application
Audit a normal day against the four clauses: where did faith get renewed, what deed left the day better, whom did you counsel toward truth, and who counselled you toward patience? Recruit for the missing clause first — most people lack not information but the caravan.
Reflection Question
Reading your last week as a ledger of hours — which entries were profit by this surah's accounting, and which were quiet losses dressed as busyness?
Action for Today
Fulfil all four clauses before sleeping: renew faith with dhikr, do one good deed, share one truth gently, and encourage one struggling person toward patience.
