Restraining Desire
Whoever feared standing before his Lord and forbade the self its whims — Paradise is the refuge. Two clauses, a whole discipline.
Qur'anic Reference · An-Nazi'at 79:40–41
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ
English Translation
“But as for him who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the soul from desire — indeed, Paradise will be the refuge.”
Bengali Translation
“আর যে তার প্রতিপালকের সামনে দাঁড়ানোর ভয় রাখল এবং প্রবৃত্তির কামনা থেকে নিজেকে বিরত রাখল — নিশ্চয়ই জান্নাতই হবে তার আশ্রয়।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Learn to tell your nafs 'no' — the ability to refuse yourself is the gate of Paradise.
Why This Matters
An age engineered around 'you deserve it' has made self-denial sound like self-harm. The verse restores the older wisdom: unrestrained desire is not freedom but a leash held by appetite, and every addiction began as a whim no one refused.
Reflection
The verse wires the two halves together: awe of the standing before Allah supplies the strength to overrule the nafs — willpower alone runs out; awe recharges. And the verb is naha, to forbid: the believer becomes an authority over his own soul, issuing rulings inward before issuing any outward. The refuge promised is precise — Paradise as ma'wa, home for the one who was never fully at home with his whims.
Real-Life Application
Pick your nafs's favourite demand — the extra scroll, the extra plate, the extra purchase — and institute a daily 'no': small, specific, non-negotiable. Before each refusal, recall the standing before your Lord for two seconds; let awe do the heavy lifting.
Reflection Question
Which desire in your life currently gives the orders — and when did you last successfully refuse it?
Action for Today
Say one deliberate 'no' to your nafs today, and mark the moment with alhamdulillah.
