No Double Standards
Woe to those who demand full measure for themselves but shortchange others — the Qur'an's indictment of every double standard.
Qur'anic Reference · Al-Mutaffifin 83:1–3
English Translation
“Woe to those who give short measure — who, when they take a measure from people, take it in full, but when they measure or weigh for them, give less.”
Bengali Translation
“দুর্ভোগ তাদের জন্য যারা মাপে কম দেয় — যারা মানুষের কাছ থেকে মেপে নেওয়ার সময় পুরোপুরি নেয়, কিন্তু তাদের মেপে বা ওজন করে দেওয়ার সময় কম দেয়।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Whatever standard you demand when receiving, apply when giving — one scale for both directions.
Why This Matters
Tatfif has outgrown the marketplace: the employee who demands full salary but delivers half effort, the critic harsh on others' faults and blind to his own, the customer of rights and debtor of duties. The opening 'woe' warns that this asymmetry, so easy to rationalise, is weighed by One whose scales never tilt.
Reflection
The verses photograph the cheat in both postures — receiving with hawk eyes, giving with a light hand — and the next verses supply the missing thought: do they not think they will be resurrected for a Tremendous Day? Double standards survive only where accounting is believed to end at the counter. The believer's cure is symmetry: measure out honesty, effort, and criticism in the same units you insist on receiving them.
Real-Life Application
Run the symmetry test on one relationship this week: list what you demand from your employer, spouse, or supplier — then honestly grade what you deliver in return, using the same rubric. Fix the largest gap from your side first, unasked.
Reflection Question
Where in your life do you keep two sets of scales — one calibrated for what you take, another for what you give?
Action for Today
Today, deliver one obligation at the exact standard you would demand if you were on the receiving end.
