Practising What You Preach
Why do you say what you do not do? The gap between our words and our lives is, to Allah, most hateful.
Qur'anic Reference · As-Saff 61:2–3
English Translation
“O you who believe! Why do you say what you do not do? Most hateful is it in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.”
Bengali Translation
“হে ঈমানদারগণ! তোমরা কেন তা বলো যা করো না? তোমরা যা করো না তা বলা আল্লাহর কাছে অতিশয় অপ্রিয়।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Close the gap: let your life be the first audience of your advice.
Why This Matters
Nothing empties words of power faster than a speaker who does not live them — children detect the gap in parents, congregations in preachers, teams in leaders. The verse's severity ('most hateful') matches the damage: hypocrisy in the advocates of truth discredits the truth itself.
Reflection
The verse does not command silence — it commands alignment. The choice is never between speaking and hypocrisy, but between growing into our words or shrinking them to our deeds. Advice can outrun practice slightly, as aspiration; it becomes maqt — divine displeasure — when the speaker has stopped even trying to catch up.
Real-Life Application
List the three counsels you give most often — to children, juniors, or friends — and grade yourself honestly on each. For the worst gap, either begin practising this week or stop preaching it until you do.
Reflection Question
Which advice do you deliver with the most confidence and follow the least — and who has noticed?
Action for Today
Take the advice you most recently gave someone else — and act on it yourself today.
