Equanimity

Do not grieve over what slips away, nor gloat over what arrives — everything was written before it reached you.

Qur'anic Reference · Al-Hadid 57:23

English Translation

“So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you, nor exult over what He has given you. And Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster.”

Bengali Translation

“যাতে তোমরা যা হারিয়েছ তার জন্য দুঃখ না করো এবং তিনি যা দিয়েছেন তা নিয়ে উল্লসিত না হও। আর আল্লাহ কোনো দাম্ভিক অহংকারীকে ভালোবাসেন না।”

The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.

Primary Moral

Hold gains and losses with a level heart — neither owns you.

Why This Matters

A heart chained to outcomes swings between despair and arrogance its whole life. The preceding verse explains the cure: every loss and gain was inscribed before it occurred — so what escaped you was never truly yours, and what reached you was never purely your doing.

Reflection

The verse does not ban feeling — Islam has room for tears and gratitude — it bans being capsized: the asa of crippling grief and the farah of strutting pride. Equanimity is not indifference; it is a heart moored in qadar, moving through storms without being owned by them. The verse's final line reveals what unchecked celebration becomes: conceit.

Real-Life Application

At your next setback, allow the feeling, then say 'qaddarallahu wa ma sha'a fa'al' — Allah decreed, and what He willed, He did — and take the next right step. At your next win, say Alhamdulillah before telling anyone, routing the credit upward first.

Reflection Question

Which loss are you still grieving as though it had been promised to you — and which gain are you wearing as though you created it?

Action for Today

Recall one old loss that later revealed a hidden mercy — and thank Allah for the plan you could not see.
