Gratitude

Thankfulness is not just good manners — it is the very condition of increase: 'If you are grateful, I will surely give you more.'

Qur'anic Reference · Ibrahim 14:7

English Translation

“And remember when your Lord proclaimed: 'If you are grateful, I will surely give you more; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is truly severe.'”

Bengali Translation

“আর স্মরণ করো, যখন তোমাদের প্রতিপালক ঘোষণা করলেন: 'তোমরা কৃতজ্ঞ হলে আমি অবশ্যই তোমাদের বাড়িয়ে দেব; আর অকৃতজ্ঞ হলে নিশ্চয়ই আমার শাস্তি বড় কঠিন।'”

The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.

Primary Moral

Practise gratitude deliberately — thankfulness opens the door to more.

Why This Matters

The ungrateful eye is never satisfied, however much it receives; the grateful eye finds wealth in what it already holds. The ayah frames gratitude as a divine promise with a guaranteed return — a spiritual law we can build a life on.

Reflection

Gratitude in the Qur'an is generative — shukr opens the door to ziyadah, increase. The ungrateful eye sees only what is missing; the grateful eye sees what has been given, and in seeing it, receives more: more contentment, more barakah, more of Allah's favour. Gratitude is less a feeling than a way of looking.

Real-Life Application

Tonight, before sleeping, name three specific blessings from today — not general ones, but today's: a meal, a conversation, a safe arrival. Say 'Alhamdulillah' for each. Repeat for seven nights and notice what changes in how the day feels.

Reflection Question

Which blessing do you use every single day but have never once thanked Allah for by name?

Action for Today

Thank one person today who serves you regularly and rarely hears it — then thank Allah who sent them.
