Confronting Ingratitude

Man is deeply ungrateful to his Lord — and he himself is a witness to it, and his love of wealth is intense. Three verses, one mirror.

Qur'anic Reference · Al-Adiyat 100:6–8

English Translation

“Indeed, mankind is ungrateful to his Lord — and indeed, he is a witness to that — and indeed, he is intense in his love of wealth.”

Bengali Translation

“নিশ্চয়ই মানুষ তার প্রতিপালকের প্রতি বড় অকৃতজ্ঞ — আর সে নিজেই এর সাক্ষী — এবং নিশ্চয়ই সে ধন-সম্পদের আসক্তিতে প্রবল।”

The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.

Primary Moral

Admit the kanud within — ingratitude denied grows; ingratitude confessed can be cured.

Why This Matters

Kanud describes the soil that swallows rain and yields nothing — a heart absorbing decades of blessings while producing complaint. The middle verse removes the standard defence: no prosecutor is needed, for the man is a witness against himself; deep down, everyone knows the gap between what he receives and what he acknowledges. Diagnosis accepted is half the treatment.

Reflection

The third verse names the engine of the disease: intense love of khayr — here meaning wealth — crowds the heart until the Giver is invisible behind the gifts. The sequence maps addiction's anatomy: craving intensifies, gratitude thins, and self-awareness watches it happen without intervening. The believer's counter-practice is naming: blessings counted aloud, by name, force the kanud soil to acknowledge the rain.

Real-Life Application

Take the witness stand voluntarily: list ten blessings you have never once thanked Allah for by name — eyesight, a debt that cleared, a harm that missed you — and clear the backlog tonight. Then attack the engine: give away some wealth precisely when the love of it flares.

Reflection Question

If your complaints and your thanks of the past week were weighed against each other, which pan would drop — and what does your own inner witness say about that?

Action for Today

Thank Allah by name for ten specific blessings today — and give one piece of wealth away at the moment you most want to keep it.
