Courtesy
Even a greeting is an ethical moment: return it with something better, or at least its equal.
Qur'anic Reference · An-Nisa 4:86
English Translation
“When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it, or return it. Indeed, Allah keeps account of all things.”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Answer every courtesy with equal or greater warmth — small graces are recorded too.
Why This Matters
Communities are stitched together by micro-moments: greetings, thanks, acknowledgements. A religion that legislates even the reply to 'salam' is teaching that no human exchange is too small for excellence.
Reflection
The verse sets a floor and points to a ceiling: never respond with less, and aspire to respond with more. The closing reminder — Allah keeps account of all things — quietly includes our smallest social gestures in the ledger of deeds. Kindness at this scale costs seconds and shapes atmospheres.
Real-Life Application
Upgrade your replies today: answer 'salam' fully, respond to messages with a touch more warmth than you received, and greet the people others walk past — guards, cleaners, drivers.
Reflection Question
Whose greetings or messages do you habitually answer with the bare minimum — and why them?
Action for Today
Give three people a fuller greeting than they gave you, starting with someone at home.
