Best in Deeds
Death and life were created to test who is best in deeds — not most in deeds. Quality is the examiner's criterion.
Qur'anic Reference · Al-Mulk 67:2
English Translation
“He who created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds — and He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.”
Bengali Translation
“তিনি মৃত্যু ও জীবন সৃষ্টি করেছেন তোমাদের পরীক্ষা করার জন্য — কে তোমাদের মধ্যে কর্মে সর্বোত্তম। আর তিনি পরাক্রমশালী, ক্ষমাশীল।”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Life grades on excellence, not volume — one deed done beautifully outweighs many done carelessly.
Why This Matters
The verse answers the oldest question — why are we here? — in one clause: this is an examination hall, and the question is ahsanu amala, whose work is best. That single word rescues us from the tyranny of quantity: the exhausted parent, the honest shopkeeper, the student with little time are all competing on a field where sincerity and quality score.
Reflection
Death is mentioned before life — created, purposeful, the deadline that gives the exam its seriousness. Scholars define 'best' as the meeting of two things: sincerity for Allah and correctness of the deed itself; missing either wing, the deed cannot fly. And the verse ends with mercy — al-Ghafur — because the Examiner forgives, and the test allows repentance as revision.
Real-Life Application
Take your most routine deed — the five prayers, your daily work, care of parents — and upgrade its quality this week: more presence, more precision, more sincerity. Better one task finished with ihsan than five begun for show.
Reflection Question
If your daily deeds were graded on beauty rather than count, which one would score lowest right now?
Action for Today
Choose one deed today and do it as beautifully as you can — unhurried, focused, and purely for Allah.
