Gracious Distance

Bear their words with patience, and part from them with a beautiful parting — dignity in withdrawal, not a slammed door.

Qur'anic Reference · Al-Muzzammil 73:10

وَاصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا

English Translation

“And be patient over what they say, and avoid them with a gracious avoidance.”

Bengali Translation

“আর তারা যা বলে তাতে ধৈর্য ধারণ করো এবং সৌজন্যের সঙ্গে তাদের এড়িয়ে চলো।”

The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.

Primary Moral

You may step away from hurtful people — but step away beautifully, without insult, vengeance, or spectacle.

Why This Matters

Between the two common errors — absorbing abuse endlessly or exiting with scorched earth — the verse legislates a third way: hajr jamil, distance kept with grace. It protects both the believer's peace and his dignity, and leaves the road back unmined should the other side ever seek it.

Reflection

This was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ under a rain of mockery he could not yet answer — and the prescription was two-fold: sabr over the words, beauty in the withdrawal. Gracious distance is not defeat; it is refusing to let someone else's tongue redesign your character. The energy saved from feuding is redirected, in this surah, to night prayer — from the noise of people to the nearness of Allah.

Real-Life Application

Identify the person or group chat whose words reliably wound you, and apply hajr jamil: reduce exposure quietly, answer briefly and courteously when you must, and never narrate the withdrawal publicly. Spend the reclaimed evenings on what this surah pairs it with — unhurried worship.

Reflection Question

Is there a distance you have taken with bitterness that could be re-taken with grace — same boundary, cleaner heart?

Action for Today

Today, mute or step back from one draining exchange — without a parting shot, and with a du'a for the person instead.
