Respecting Privacy
Do not enter homes without permission and greeting — the Qur'an fences private space with adab fourteen centuries before privacy law.
Qur'anic Reference · An-Nur 24:27
English Translation
“O you who believe! Do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their occupants. That is best for you, so that you may take heed.”
The moral, reflection, and application sections below are educational guidance inspired by the cited verse — they are not a translation or an authoritative tafsir.
Primary Moral
Honour the boundaries of others — their home, their phone, their story are theirs to open.
Why This Matters
Dignity needs a protected inner room — a space where a person is not observed, judged, or intruded upon. A society that respects thresholds produces people who feel safe, and safe people can afford to be good.
Reflection
The word ista'nisu implies more than knocking — it means seeking a welcome, entering only where you bring comfort, not intrusion. In our time the 'houses' have multiplied: inboxes, galleries, browsing histories, past mistakes. The ethic of the threshold applies to every one of them.
Real-Life Application
Never open anyone's phone, drawer, or messages without asking — including your spouse's and children's, except where genuine duty of care requires. And do not press people to share what they have chosen to keep private.
Reflection Question
Which boundary of another person do you cross casually — and how would you feel if they crossed yours?
Action for Today
Ask permission today before entering a room, borrowing an item, or sharing someone's photo or news.
