Communities that abandoned the first command should not wonder why they trail in everything commanded after it.

Reflection

The qualifier changes everything: read bismi rabbik — in your Lord's name. Knowledge unmoored from the Creator can build bombs as easily as hospitals; knowledge anchored in His name arrives with a conscience attached. And the verse roots the syllabus in creation itself — 'who created' — making the lab, the field, and the mushaf pages of one library. The follow-up verses add His method: He taught by the pen — so writing, recording, and teaching are all descended from that first cave-command.

Real-Life Application

Re-inaugurate your learning under the first command: begin every study session — Qur'an, textbook, or trade skill — with bismillah and an intention to benefit creation. Reclaim twenty minutes daily from consumption for reading that grows you, and keep a pen near it, since the pen is honoured in the same passage.
